Ballarat is a Rural Base Hospital and Regional Trauma Centre servicing a population of approximately 200,000 people and a land area extending from the Western boundary of Melbourne to the South Australian border. It is the primary referral centre for its local region and the secondary referral centre for much of Western Victoria.
Our Emergency Department case load comprises a broad mix of medicine from major trauma to primary care across all age groups. Our department is growing, with attendances currently in excess of 52,000 and growing at 5% per annum, approximately 25 % paediatric attendances.
This fixed term full-time position is to cover Maternity leave and commences on 5th August and ends on 1st December 2013. There is a possibility that the role will be extended to 2nd February 2014 but this has not been confirmed as yet.

In 2014 there are four positions based in the Emergency Department available for applicants who are HMO 3 or 4. In June 2013 Ballarat Health Services Emergency Department commences the recruitment process for full time positions starting February 2014. There are 15 full-time positions based at Ballarat Health Services plus 2 full-time positions that rotate to Horsham. We have applied for funding for an additional position at Ballarat and will appoint to this as part of this recruitment process if the funding is approved. The 19 positions have specific rotations that are listed in the attached Position preference form. The positions include the following rotations:
HORSHAM
There are two positions in Critical Care based in Horsham. In 2013 one of these positions was filled for 12 months by a trainee interested in critical care. The other position was shared by two ED registrars, with 6 months in Ballarat and 6 months in Horsham. For 2014 Horsham and Ballarat will again collaborate with the recruitment of these positions.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE
There are 6 ED registrars on the ED roster that include leading the ED team on night shifts on a 1:6 roster.
ANAESTHETICS
These are accredited for ACEM training and they work on a different roster to the ANZCA trainees. The trainees for these rotations are selected/allocated by the ED. The roster, supervision and training are managed by the anaesthetic department.
INTENSIVE CARE
These are positions accredited for ACEM training on the ICU registrar and HMO roster for trainees in Emergency Medicine. The trainees for these rotations are selected/allocated by the ED. The Medical Workforce Unit and ICU manage these rosters.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE / SHORT STAY UNIT
These positions are based on a four weekly roster cycle which includes ED, ED nights, and SSU. The ED nights involve being the 2nd senior person on the night shift. This is an important step in training, including preparation for future night shifts in charge.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE / PAEDIATRICS

Volunteers provide a valued and unique service to Ballarat Health Services across all sites- to acute, sub-acute, residential and community services. Over 260 volunteers give their time to patient support, friendly visiting, activity assistance, fundraising, customer service, meal assistance and other programs. The Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre (BRICC) is the newest addition to the volunteer program.

The Diabetes Education Service is a busy department which provides care to people living with diabetes in the following areas; acute inpatients, subacute inpatients, pregnant women, children and ambulatory based care. Services include insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring. The service is supported by a full time Endocrinologist and the broad allied health team. The aim of the program for the General Nursing Stream is to develop confidence, competence and skill to the beginning practitioner whilst providing support, guidance and realistic learning experiences in a friendly and supportive environment. Six months of the transition year will be allocated in medical and surgical areas to consolidate clinical competence in these areas.

The position requires experience working in a community setting and it is essential to have proven skills in home modifications, equipment prescription (including hoists and wheelchairs), carer education and funding applications e.g. State Wide Equipment Program.

An enthusiastic and experienced Lymphoedema Physiotherapist is sought to work within our multidisciplinary team at Ballarat Health Services. The position involves the provision of clinical Lymphoedema services within the Ballarat Health Services Lymphoedema Program.
The Lymphoedema Program is based on a self-management model of care and includes management of clients with oncology and non-oncology related lymphoedema. The Physiotherapist will be expected to be involved in the diagnosis of lymphoedema, planning of appropriate management strategies, including education, instruction in self massage, exercise prescription, both specific and general, and appropriate compression therapy as required.
You will be well supported by experienced senior Physiotherapy and Medical staff. You will enjoy a friendly place to work, where you have an identity and responsibility. Professional development is supported through regular in-service education, professional support from colleagues and the provision of support to attend continuing education.
