Ballarat is a rural Base Hospital servicing a population of approximately 200,000 people and a land area extending from the Western boundary of Melbourne to the South Australian border. It is the primary referral centre for its local region and the secondary referral centre for much of Western Victoria.

Ballarat Health Services is a major training site for the University of Melbourne and Deakin Rural Clinical Schools. Senior staff are strongly committed to teaching and the professional development of Interns, HMOs and Registrars.

Ballarat offers a superb regional lifestyle with excellent public and private schools, recreational and sporting facilities, shopping, entertainment and cultural pursuits. Country or city living is available within minutes of the hospital and there is easy access to Melbourne (70 minutes).

This position is an Accredited Non-Core training year and offers an Advanced Trainee an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of clinical gastroenterological and hepatological pathologies. This includes learning opportunities across a wide range of endoscopic procedures. The Advanced Trainee is supported by a gastroenterology intern.

The Gastroenterology Service is part of the wider Internal Medicine Service which has 11 BPTs and ATs in General Medicine, Oncology and Cardiology. The Gastroenterology AT will have the opportunity to participate in training activities as part of this group and may occasionally participate in the General Medical weekend roster.

Role:
• The Gastroenterology Registrar is responsible for daily ward round and responding to all relevant inpatient and out patient’s referrals.
• The appointee will have a broad exposure to the full range of gastroenterology pathology and procedures.
• The Registrar will be involved in an unselected GI outpatient clinic; have the opportunity to contribute and be trained on 2 endoscopy sessional lists per week.
• The appointee will contribute to weekly imaging/MDT meeting; GI cancer MDT and Journal club.
• While not routinely within the general medicine roster, this role may have occasional rostered duties in general medicine.
• The appointee will be expected to present at the hospital Grand Round and in addition attend and participate both in the general medical and GI meeting calendar.
• There will be an expectation of active supervision and contribution to the support and training of both the Gastroenterology intern and the general intern/BPT training and examination preparation programmes for junior staff.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:
Good communication skills including competency in spoken and written English
Medical knowledge consistent with an Advanced Trainee in Gastroenterology Medicine.
Essential Criteria:
•A qualified medical practitioner registered with AHPRA
•Successful completion of FRACP part 1 (written and clinical)
•Documented experience and clinical skills in the assessment and management of acute hospital patients
•A documented ability to work as a team and provide independent clinical decisions with senior consultation where appropriate
•A commitment to provide high quality clinical care to General gastroenterology and hepatology patients
•An ability to supervise the activities of more junior medical staff
•Well development organisational skills and willingness to be flexible in supporting the wider general medical team where required
•A commitment to developing and improving professional skills and work practices, contribute to governance and follow standardised procedures
•Residency or VISA with right to work in Australia

Ballarat Health Services (BHS) is a regional trauma service servicing a population of approximately 240,000 people and a land area extending from the western boundary of Melbourne to the South Australian border. The Emergency Department case load comprises a broad mix of medicine from major trauma to primary care across all age groups including approximately 28% paediatric attendances. The ED has a defined Fast Track area and a separate 8 bed Short Stay Unit. Admission rate and patient acuity (by Australasian triage scale) has been increasing over the last few years.

BHS Emergency Department is accredited by ACEM for 12 months of advanced training (including paediatric logbook training). The ED has access to both anaesthetic and intensive care rotations locally and rural skills posts at Wimmera Health Care. The ED also has strong relationships with tertiary EDs in Melbourne.

BHS hosts clinical schools for both University of Melbourne and Deakin University. This includes a modern education precinct on site with access to state of the art simulation laboratory. The ED is strongly committed to teaching and the professional development of Interns, HMOs and Registrars – including protected training time for all medical staff.

Ballarat Health Services is moving to strengthen its Emergency Department workforce by recruiting new Emergency Physicians. A recent review of the ED identified staffing as a key issue to address and there is a strong commitment to achieve this. There already have and will also be further changes introduced and developed as a result of this review in an effort to improve ED performance. This is your opportunity to join a cohesive group of Emergency Physicians and have a positive input into the future direction of Emergency Medicine in Ballarat.

The ED has experienced strong growth in recent years with patient attendances increasing to around 53,000 presentations currently. Growth in absolute patient numbers has slowed in the last 2-3 years however there has been significant increase in ATS Category 2 and 3 patients. This is reflected in an admission rate that is also climbing (currently 21%). Paediatric presentations account for approximately 28% of attendances. Also in recent years the ED has expanded with completion of separate Fast Track area and also SSU.

The ED is accredited with ACEM for 12 months of advanced training and forms an EMET training hub with Wimmera Health Care Group (Horsham). We have had several ED certificate candidates as well as diploma candidates since these were introduced. The department maintains separate registrar and HMO teaching programs with paid training for both groups. Ballarat has clinical schools from both University of Melbourne and Deakin University with the ED teaching students from both.
